What Is Group & Family Counseling?

Group and family counseling focus on addressing concerns within relationships. While it also can work toward mental health improvements, its unique approach aims to equip individuals with tools for long-term benefits to a specific social dynamic.

Some of the common features of group and family counseling include:

  • Strengthening communication and active listening
  • Building trust between individuals in the group
  • Exploring conflict and supporting constructive resolution
  • Fostering mutual understanding
  • Supporting loved ones facing mental health challenges
  • Practicing healthy coping strategies for stressors

What Types of Counseling Do We Offer?

Every family, relationship, and group has its unique features and dynamics. The type of approach will depend on what concerns the group wants to resolve and where they want their relationship to be. Some common methods we use include:
  • Family Systems Therapy: Aims to reshape unhealthy patterns or dynamics. Examines family roles, interactions, and conflicts to promote understanding and growth.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Uses CBT’s methods for identifying and remodeling unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. Adapts the process for ones specific to generating conflict or straining relationships.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): EFT centers around strengthening emotional bonds and understanding. It is often used for partners or families struggling with trust or attachment.
  • Psychoeducation: Focuses on providing tools, exercises, and education for clients to better understand mental health. The more you know, the more you can build a supportive environment.
  • Conflict Resolution Counseling: Homes in on disputes and conflict, providing structured approaches to resolve them.
  • Supportive Group Counseling: Starts with creating a safe space for individuals with similar challenges. For example, grief, addiction, or parenting stress. From there, it offers a place to connect, heal, and support one another.

Yes! Counseling and therapy can be very flexible, often blending multiple approaches. Individual therapy can provide further support for a person also participating in group therapy.
